What is proofreading?

Originally, proofreading was the checking of ‘proofs’ – final versions of a manuscript – before they were sent to print. Nowadays, it often means something rather different: at its most simple, the correction of all errors of grammar, spelling and punctuation in a piece of writing.

In practice, however, it often involves much more than this.

Proofreading often includes checking for clarity (how clearly you are expressing yourself), coherence (how the script is holding together), flow, consistency of style and tone, presentation of quotes and citations and ‘readability’ – how easy it is to read and understand.

Who needs a proofreader?

If you’re planning on putting anything into print, whether online or on paper, you will benefit from a proofreader. Even if you consider yourself a good writer, you are likely to be blind to  your own mistakes: we all are.

Errors are a distraction and erode the reader’s confidence in you and your work. At best, grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors  are annoying and take your reader’s precious attention from the content. At worse, they disengage the reader and destroy the credibility of your writing – whether fictional or factual. Having that ‘second pair of eyes’ is therefore invaluable, whatever you’re writing.
